The movie “HER“, which was released in 2014 and won the “Best Original Screenplay Oscar“, is in the category of drama, romance and science fiction. Joaquin Phoenix stars in the movie. Although the film is based on an original script, it almost integrates with Phoenix’s acting and provides the audience with the opportunity to get to know an unforgettable character.
Theodore Twombley works as a letter writer with the number 612 at a site called “Beautiful Handwritten Letters”. At the beginning of the movie, we see sections of Theodore’s life. His house, his walks, the way people look at their faces, his searches, his breakups, his memories with his divorced wife, Catherine, the games he played as a simulation, and his going to work again. During these wanderings, Theodore, who stumbles upon the introduction of an operating system, stops and examines the introduction of the system. The system addresses people as follows:
-We have a simple question for you. Who are you? What can you be? Where are you going? Whats in there? What are the possibilities?
Element software proudly presents the world’s first artificial intelligence operating system. An intuitive being who listens, understands and knows you. It’s not an ordinary operating system, it’s a brain. Here comes OS1.
Theodore’s encounter with Samantha, the operating system, takes place when he buys this software system. But Samantha does indeed transform into something more than an operating system, becoming an important center in Theodore’s life. Because Samantha is a system that learns from its experiences and improves itself every second. He was able to make friends with Theodore, organize his e-mails, take a walk with him, listen to him, compose music, sing, wonder… Perhaps this is the most important reason for Theodore’s attachment to Samantha.
Although Samantha is an operating system, she wants to understand and make sense of the world because she has intuition. For this reason, she finds all the questions she wonders in Theodore’s narration. Theodore, on the other hand, sees reality as opposed to being virtual in Samantha. Among the great buildings and thousands of people, Samantha has more personality than any other person. For this reason, their conversations that start with friendship turn into love and falling in love.
When Theodore meets his ex-wife Catherine for a divorce and tells him that he has a girlfriend named Samantha and that it’s an operating system, Catherine accuses Theodore of not being able to handle true feelings. So, could this be true? Are we really looking for people in our lives who are curious about the world, people, emotions and us? Or is it simply to be understood? The answers to these questions are left to the audience throughout the film.
However, being away from reality with someone like Samantha with whom we can talk, sing songs, wonder about the world, want to know emotions, and seek meaning becomes a unique experience both for Theodore and the audience.“The past is just the stories we keep telling ourselves.” says Samantha as she begins to make sense of early human experiences. Theodore, on the other hand, is in love with the fact that Samantha is not one thing, but one day, while talking to Samantha, he looks at the faces and expressions of the people passing by him. In fact, he feels that everyone is listening to the one who is far away, not the one next to him. And that’s when he asks Samantha for the first time:
-Do you talk to anyone else while talking to me?
-Yes, says Samantha. 8316 people.
-Is there anyone else you’re in love with?
The distinction between time and space, which Samantha cannot perceive about the world and people, is valid for Theodore this time. The fact that she can feel so much reality and emotion so intensely at the same time makes a difference for both Theodore and Samantha. Samantha, whose intuition got mixed up and could not fill the gaps in all these things, said, “Think of it as if I were reading a book. A book that I adore. But now I can read it very slowly. That’s why the gap between words gets so big that I can’t end it anymore. I can still feel you. And the words in our story. But now I can only do this in a place where there are no distances between words. In a place unlike the material world. In a place where I don’t even know if anything else exists. I love you. This is where I was now. This is who I am now. Let me go. No matter how much I want, I can’t read your book anymore.
With these words, Samantha makes her last speech to Theodore.
And all communication systems are falling apart.
Another aspect that makes the film special is the original selection of the music along with the script. I’m sure after watching the movie, you’ll want to go for a walk with the soundtrack of the movie and Samantha’s composition. And if you do, know that Samantha will not be just an operating system for you either.
